"This paper is desperate": An Introduction to Peer-Review

An SPR Webinar

Jan R. Böhnke, University of Dundee, UK

Thursday February 22nd, 2018 at 10am EST

Journals and funding agencies rely on peer-reviews of papers and applications and therefore constructive peer-review plays a vital role in the quality control of the scientific process. Peer-reviewing is a key activity within and for the scientific community and it is an element in all models for developing quality control in science. Conducting peer-reviews well and efficiently is therefore a key skill for any researcher and participation in it (appropriate to career stage) is expected for career development.

The webinar starts by presenting the general editorial processes and the production of a manuscript. Based on this will be described how the review(er) fits in. Next we will discuss the practicalities of performing a review, for example when to accept a manuscript for review; key elements of a review; and how to formulate a recommendation. We will end with suggestions on how to evidence your activity. Throughout, examples will be used to illustrate good reviewing practice and ample time for discussion and questions will be reserved.
