WELCOME TO CHILE!

Dear members: Few people will ever have a chance to visit the last corner of the world, down south on planet earth, where a beautiful country hangs, like a balcony, from the Andes Mountains over the Pacific Ocean. Chile is a jewel of Latin America and Santiago is one of its vibrant centers.

Santiago is also surrounded by wonderful sites: it is only 100 km away from Valparaiso, a beautiful city fringing the cost, which has been declared a human heritage. In addition, it is an one hour and a half from one of the best ski resorts in Latin America and near to wineries that have made Chile world famous for its wines!

Because Chile is a thin country, a brief flight will bring you to the driest desert of the world, with the spectacular moon valley in San Pedro de Atacama (an experience not to be missed!). Also within reach are the majestic rock towers and landscapes in Torres del Paine, on the southernmost part of the planet.

Santiago is a modern and safe city, with state of the art technologies and communications that will allow you to maintain contact with your home and work. In the civic center, where the meeting will take place, you will have the opportunity to get to know our past and recent history, including the pacific transition from a dictatorship to our well-known democracy. Great restaurants (where you can expect exquisite seafood like no other place in the world and exciting nightlife (plenty of bars and pubs!) will provide you with the ideal conditions to digest and process (or forget!) all the intellectual stimulation that you will experience during the meeting. However, we urge you not to make plans for Saturday night, as we plan some surprises for the SPR closing banquet.

We are of course aware that coming to our country is rather expensive, but your stay will be more convenient than what you may expect due to the fact that meals and lodgings are less expensive than in Europe and North America.

In addition to all the sites and excitements, Santiago, Chile and Latin America are experiencing a great period of development in psychotherapy research, due in part to the vitality and recognition of several international Ph.D. programs. As such, our postgraduate students and young researchers are expecting to share their findings and learn from the discussion with their international colleagues.

It is thus with great pleasure that, the local arrangements committee invites you to attend and participate in the 2009 International Meeting of the Society for Psychotherapy Research, which will be held on June 24-27, Santiago de Chile (http://www.sernatur.cl/internacional/?lang=2, click on “Santiago” in the map on the left).

The local arrangement committee will work in close collaboration with The Department of Psychiatry of the Pontificia Universidad Católica, the Psychotherapy Task Force of the Society of Neurology and Psychiatry, and the local SPR group to make Santiago a great host of the next SPR meeting. We are all looking forward to welcoming you!
