An SPR Webinar

Heidi M. Levitt, Ph.D.
University of Massachusetts Boston

Wednesday May 10th, 2017 at 11am

As more and more qualitative methods are developed and popularized in psychology, the process of designing qualitative research has become increasingly complex.  Should researchers select a method and then try to adhere to its procedures?  When should procedures be adapted or changed to fit researchers’ study characteristics?  How can psychotherapy researchers best use qualitative methods to meaningfully answer their questions?  Qualitative researchers have long expressed the concern that reviews of qualitative research articles frequently utilize inflexible sets of procedures and can provide contradictory feedback when evaluating acceptability.

This webinar summarizes the framework of methodological integrity, an approach that emphasizes the conceptual underpinnings of the design and review process and can assist researchers in making decisions about their design.   This framework has been developed in conjunction with leaders across qualitative research methods, so it holds relevance for a wide variety of methodological approaches.  When responding to reviews, authors also can use this framework to challenge reviewers’ evaluations that are based upon the assumption that rigid adherence to existing methods is necessary by referring to the logic underpinning of research design.

The webinar considers how researchers should not only seek to learn about a given qualitative method, but to craft studies that will produce findings that generate useful and insightful contributions that benefit the field by improving therapists and therapy practice.  After a presentation of approximately 30 minutes, there will be ample time for questions and discussion.
