2009 Distinguished Research Career Award
William B. Stiles, Ph.D.

William B. Stiles

William B. Stiles is a professor of psychology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, USA. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1972. He taught previously at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he has held visiting positions at the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds in England, at Massey University in New Zealand, and at the University of Joensuu in Finland.


He is the author of Describing Talk: A Taxonomy of Verbal Response Modes and more than 250 book chapters and journal articles. He served as president of the Society for Psychotherapy Research (1997-1998) and as North American Editor of Psychotherapy Research (1999-2003). He is currently Associate Editor of British Journal of Clinical Psychology, and Co-editor of Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapies.
