In Memoriam

Uwe Hentschel (23.1.1940-17.11.2017)

Very sadly SPR has to announce that Uwe Hentschel has passed away November 17, 2017. He was an active member of the SPR almost from the society´s origin and served as (the third) European Editor of Psychotherapy Research from 2000 to 2005.

Uwe Hentschel was born in Greifswald (a city in the Northeast of Germany close to the Baltic Sea), received his Diploma in Psychology at the University of Giessen and his Ph.D. at the University of Freiburg. He worked as a grantee of the German Research Council in Lund (Sweden) and held different positions in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich, before he received a Postdoc position (and later a professorship) at the University of Mainz. From there he moved to the Netherlands in 1987 where he held the position of a professor and chair of personality at the University of Leiden until his retirement.

Uwe Hentschel´s research interests were manifold. He worked on perception, experimental studies in psychosomatic medicine and on defence mechanisms. He is probably most well-known from his seminal publications in this field, but also for his work related to the therapeutic alliance.

I had many encounters with Uwe as a co-editor of the journal and enjoyed discussing scientific and general questions with this scholar man who had a very unique kind of humour and a fascinating way to put complicated facts in a nutshell. Not surprising that his obituary notice was opened with the (German) statement “Im Prinzip ist alles ganz einfach” (In principle, everything is quite simple). I met Uwe for the last time at the SPR International Meeting in Brisbane/Australia 2013. At this time his health already seemed to be impaired.
Uwe is survived by his wife Marleen Hentschel-van der Voort and his children Caterin, Ladger, Mayke and Anouk. We all will miss him.
